Jean Nouvel, born in France in 1945, studied at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts from 1966 to 1972. During this time, he worked as an assistant in the architectural office of Claude Parent and Paul Virilio. In 1970, he won his first competition. In 1987, he had his international breakthrough as an architect with the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris and received the Grand Prix d'Architecture. His designs, from architecture through exhibition designs to furniture designs, are characterised by an interplay of transparency, light and shadow. In 2003, he was involved in more than 40 projects in 13 countries with a team of 100 architects, town planners, interior, landscape, graphic and product designers.
